Though most parents would not dream of letting their young children go out in a city on their own, they may not always show the same care when it comes to the virtual world of the internet. However, letting a child explore the internet unchecked has the potential to expose them to many of the same risks. It can be difficult to ensure the safety of your child without invading their privacy, and watching over their shoulder everything they do online is no solution. A better idea is the use of parental control software in order to make the internet a safer place for your child.

So what risks are there and how can they be minimized?

1. Exposure to inappropriate content, such as pornography, gambling and firearms websites. This is a common fear of parents, but one which is easily addressed. Internet Blocking software and Web Filtering software are both easily available to install on your computer to prevent such websites from being accessed.

2. Posting inappropriate information, for example, revealing a home address or telephone number. Many children do not realize how public and permanent information shared on the internet is, and may not believe there is any danger in sharing these details. Software which can help with this is the installation of an email alert system, which will automatically notify you if this information is typed into your home computer, allowing you to then raise the issue.

3. Illegal downloading. A child who downloads albums from torrent sites without paying for them is breaking the law. By blocking certain downloads (or preventing downloading entirely when your child is online) you can ensure this does not occur.

4. Cyber-bulling. Persecution of children is as common on social networking sites as it is in the playground. There is not one simple way to prevent this, but there are various things you can do to alert you if this is taking place. Chat monitoring is available where you can be notified if certain keywords are used and in what context, so you can judge if the conversations your children are having online are appropriate. It is also possible to install keystroke logging software which logs every single thing that is typed into the computer, thus allowing you complete knowledge of everything your child has said.

5. Internet overuse. It can be easy for children to become hooked on the web, and it is possible for internet use to spiral to unhealthy levels. In order to ensure your child is still making time for homework and friends, consider software which limits the time children are allowed to log into the computer.

This is just a brief overview of some of the main risks involved in letting your child use the internet. The use of parental control software is certainly one way of reducing these risks and making it a safer place. However, parents should also note that software is no substitute for talking to your child and making sure they understand what dangers exist. The two should go hand in hand in a safe internet use policy for you and your child.
